the winter of my discontent

Every weekend season or so, I fall into a weird funk in which my mind meanders through all the things I could be doing with my life. This has nothing to do with not liking my current situation (love my marriage, family, job, and friends as are) nor does it have anything to do with reality. It has a lot to do with me being a Virgo; I used to keep a scrap of a magazine horoscope that highlighted my sign's tendency to harbor a "vague sense of dissatisfaction."

Regardless of the reasons or plausibility, this infliction makes me halt all activities that don't immediately affect my health or well-being (so basically I've been going to work, eating, sleeping, and occasionally interacting with husband & children). I'm trying to work through it by saying it out loud, to you. So you can tell me I'm crazy; I don't listen to myself very well sometimes.

Fantastical ideas I've been having lately, for no good reasons:
  1. Being a stay-at-home mom again
  2. Buying a new house
  3. Changing to a different church (this is totally Donald Miller's fault as I've been reading Blue Like Jazz)
  4. Attempting to be a real-live author
  5. Teaching overseas
  6. Moving overseas, teaching or not
  7. Begging LiveWire! to let me work for them
  8. Taking classes to really finally become a decent cook
  9. Hiring a housekeeper
  10. Buying an entirely new wardrobe
  11. Staying in bed for 72 hours
  12. Getting a dog
  13. Fasting
  14. Trying out for Survivor

#9 sounds excellent to me.

Funny, I didn't know Virgos were known for their vague discontent--my husband is a Virgo and I've never noticed this.

So - if you quit your job, can I have it? :-)

Hold off on the living/teaching overseas plans for three years. Then we can spend a year together in the same charming French village.

You had me at "hire a housekeeper".

I have a cleaning crew come in about once per quarter - that works pretty well and makes it easy for me to more or less "maintain" things plus its not that expensive.

I completely go through the same thing. I blame it on seasonal affect disorder, (which I dream that I have) I usually want to paint my front door red, get a job, take my kids out of school and live in europe for a year, wish I were OCD, train for a sport I've never considered..... and the list goes on.

I think a lot of your ideas are very do-able! Especially the cooking class! I wouldn't go overseas... unless Stu and the kids are on board with going too... but of course it would be a very exciting adventure! But there's nothing wrong with trying out for "survivor"... I've considered it but I keep getting pregnant!!!

That No. 2 idea? I can totally hook you up.

Re: the cooking class, I would buddy up with you on that if you find one. : )

all my friends are Virgos or Leos...I can relate via them, but as a ironic, really.

I think it's fine to fantasize about changes, and then when you are ready to jump out there, it's okay to take those risks. At least that's what Greg says when I talk about doing new things.

Maybe pick something small, and start there. Maybe it will scratch the itch. Or maybe you'll be happy where you are.

Okay, all done for now. We'll talk more.

I've been angling to move overseas for a while now, but no luck on convincing the husband this is a good idea. And hiring a housekeeper is the best thing I ever did. Love it. And she's become one of my best friends. You're list isn't crazy!

FINALLY You've Solved my Mystery - I'M A VIRGO! I so hear you.

This month I chucked it ALL out and am starting fresh. But I had to go to work naked because I didn't have time to shop. OK I was kidding about that part.

But seriously? I am having some same, big thoughts. I blame it on being in my early 40's and kids are leaving for college. And now, on being a Virgo!

As long as you keep me around and don't put 'replace Stu' on the list, I'm OK with most things on your list. I do like your income though, it let's us do fun things like having crazy bar bills and ordering pizza at 1:30 in the morning while at a hotel ;)

I sooooooo hear you about the mood thing...I'm smack in the middle of menopause and this winter has been very hard for me too. I can't seem to get myself motivated to accomplish ANYTHING. Every night lately, dinner has been "fend for yourself night". I keep the laundry caught up and occasionally load the dishwasher and call it good...

I Lovey McLovey your list.

just think of all the things you might've not tried, not done had it not been for your vague virgo discontent. brilliant.

when i dislike my libra indecisiveness i think of all the bad decisions i've avoided by not making a decision at all.
